There are 39 police areas in England and Wales. The Secretary of State is responsible for designating a Police Area Returning Officer (PARO) for each police area.
The Police Area Returning Officer (PARO) for Northumbria is Mr Patrick Melia, Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council. He is legally accountable for the effective running of the election, any matters relating to the election process should be referred to Mr Melia.
